“Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) integrates elements of many effective psychotherapies in structured protocols that are designed to maximize treatment effects. These include psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies2. EMDR is an information processing therapy and uses an eight phase approach."
"During EMDR1 the client attends to past and present experiences in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. Then the client is instructed to let new material become the focus of the next set of dual attention. This sequence of dual attention and personal association is repeated many times in the session". When I was trained in EMDR in 1990, I could not have known what a successful therapeutic effect it would have on clients in the years to come but I did recognize EMDR had a great potential for healing that I would dedicate myself to for the next coming years. As a result, many of my clients have benefited in having shifts in their lives they were not able to have in their previous therapy approaches.
Since 1990, I have been an EMDR Facilitator with the EMDR Institute helping train clinicians from all over the world. My enthusiasm about this efficacious psychotherapy approach is a strong today as it was 18 years ago.
